Talented and Gifted
Morley Senior High School Academic Extension Programme. Coordinator: Mr Peter Crayden.
Morley Senior High School re-established the TAGS ( Talented & Gifted Students) programmme for year 8, 9 and 10 students at the beginning of term two last year (2007). Based on its success it is being extended and offered this year with the aim of generating “academic excellence” across the school curriculum. Morley Senior High School again achieved excellent results with Curriculum Council Awards for 2007 including two Subject Exhibitions (top students in the state) three Certificates of Excellence and four Certificates of Distinction. The Extension program aims on building on these types of results in the near future.
Nominations and applications are currently being called from Staff, Parents, interested students and Peers of Students. There will be a selection process and applicants may be offered a position if they meet entry requirements. The Tags program will comprise of 30 individuals selected across years 8, 9 and 10. There will not be a limit of students per year group, but rather a selection of the most appropriate candidates for one of 30 positions available. The TAGS programme will offer students an opportunity to develop new and exciting skills to assist them reach their fullest potential. The selection process will be made from student application and nominations from teachers, parents and peers.
The programme is run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with the programme being held in a special room in the Art Department with access to IT and group work facilities. The programme runs from from 8:30 am to 9:30 am and students do not attend tutorial on these two days. During the remainder of the week students may receive one on one mentoring and may participate in further enrichment activities such as guest speaker programmes and excursions.

The programme will develop learning skills and scaffolds. Students will also be encouraged to develop their own research project in the subject that they achieve in and seek a staff mentor to guide them in the best direction.
Teachers, Heads of Departments and Teachers in charge will be invited to offer short programmes in the areas of their expertise. This is a school programme that encourages every department at Morley Senior High School to participate. There will be incursions and excursions where students will be given an opportunity to apply skills acquired as a result of involvement in the programme in the work place. This provides students with the opportunity to meet with highly successful people in the real world.
Students will be encouraged to participate in a wide range of competitions and to undertake special projects across the learning areas. They will also be encouraged to undertake special projects of interest. Students will given opportunities to have one on one mentoring while at school and will be expected to have their work displayed at appropriate forums.
